Authorities are investigating after an incarcerated man was found dead in a Pima County jail on Friday morning.

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Alejandro Romo, 42, was found dead in his cell at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex.

At around 5:30 a.m., a prison officer found Romo unresponsive in his cell.

The PCSD said the Tucson Fire Department responded and pronounced Romo dead.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the jail and found no signs of trauma or suspicious circumstances, according to the sheriff’s department.

An investigation is ongoing and more information will be “released as it becomes available,” the sheriff’s department said.

In February, 18-year-old Sylvestre Inzunza was also found dead in a Pima County jail. A prison officer found Inzunza unconscious in his cell. As with Romo’s death, an initial investigation revealed no signs of trauma or suspicious circumstances.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, at least 12 people have died in Pima County jails since January 2021.
