On Saturday, October 1, 2022, at or around 1:51 a.m., the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at

regarding a shooting that had occurred in rural southern Clay County. The first caller, later identified as

Leah Butters DOB 11-25-1967 of Clay City said she was shot by her boyfriend and needed help.

When deputies and other first responders arrived, they began to take lifesaving action for multiple gunshot wounds.

Following the injuries, Ms. Butters was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital where she is still listed in critical condition.


Shortly after the first 911 call, a second 911 call was received. During this call, dispatchers were informed that

several men had been shot and were driving to the hospital. As the three men traveled north on SR 59, they eventually encountered STAR Ambulance at the Pilot gas station. As medical personnel rendered aid to two men with gunshot wounds, it was determined that a man, later identified as Tim Haydon DOB 10-28-1969 of Coal City, had died of his injuries . The second man, later identified as Tim’s son, Jerick Hayden DOB 25/02/1999 of Coal City, was treated and transported by ambulance to a hospital in Terre Haute.

Although the investigation is still ongoing, deputies believe the domestic incident began earlier in the evening when personal property was damaged. The three men are believed to have gone to Ms Butters’ home heavily armed to confront her about the damage. It was during this altercation that several shots were fired by several people who ultimately left two injured and one dead.
