Chennai, March 14:Tiruvannamalai police have arrested the director of a children’s home for sexually assaulting inmates aged between 14 and 16.
Police acted on Sunday after the boys called the child helpline and accused the manager, Duraipandyan (36) of sexually abusing them in the past three months.
Up to 80 children, orphans or from broken families, live on government assistance at home. The owner of the Sagairaj home was also arrested by the police for failing to report the sexual abuse issue to the authorities and the children’s line.
There are five such government-supported children’s homes operating in Tiruvannamalai district.
A team of officials from the District Child Protection Office (DCPO), Childline and police officers investigated and searched the children’s home after seven children called the 1098 helpline.
Based on a complaint, Chetpet Police filed a case under Sections 7, 8, 19(1) and 21(2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (Pocso) against Duraipandian . Article 75 of the law on juvenile justice and article 506 (1) of the CPI have also been criticized.
The District Child Protection Office (DCPO) Legal Protection Officer, J. Chitra Priya, said in a statement that the children have been transferred to a reception center for the time being. (IANS)
