An inmate at Cumberland County Jail has died. According to a statement from the Cumberland County Sheriff‘s Office, “During rounds, one of the correctional officers discovered an unconscious offender in his cell. The officer called for help and began to take lifesaving action, joined by prison medical staff and Portland MEDCU, but failed to revive the offender. The detainee’s name has not been released. Sheriff Kevin Joyce told News 8 the deceased was taken to jail on Wednesday, June 1. “Portland PD is leading the investigation, so they will be the ones commenting on the matter as they investigate the death,” Joyce said in an email. According to the sheriff’s office, the death is being investigated by the Portland Police Department, the Maine Department of Corrections and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. No information related to the possible cause of the inmate’s death has been released.
