SPRINGFIELD, MA (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Tree Wardens and Foresters Association honored Springfield City forester Alex Sherman with its 21st annual Seth H. Swift Tree Warden of the Year award.

According to the press release sent to 22News, the award recognizes a tree guard who demonstrates leadership, dedication and commitment to the profession. The annual award is named in honor of longtime MTWFA member and former President Seth “Swifty” Swift, who died on January 1, 2004. MTWFA President Arthur Goodhind presented the elegant award to the money tree to Sherman at the association’s 109th annual meeting and conference in January. 11, 2022.

The Mayor of Sarno said, “Congratulations to our municipal forester Alex Sherman for this well-deserved award and recognition. Working with PBRM Manager, Patrick Sullivan, our Parks Department’s Forestry Division does a wonderful job of caring for all of our public shade trees and maintaining our beautiful parklands for our urban city. From our tree planting program, operating our own local tree nursery, and celebrating our annual Arbor Day celebration, Alex Sherman has been a strong supporter and advocate for our trees and parks. Springfield for the benefit of our residents and our business community. Congratulations again to Alex Sherman for receiving this honor.

Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management (PBRM) Executive Director Patrick Sullivan said, Congratulations to our city’s Forester Alex Sherman on this great achievement and honor. The City of Springfield has some of the best and most beautiful open spaces and parks and our Urban Tree Program has been nationally recognized for its success. Alex has played a vital role in these initiatives. Congratulations again to Alex on this statewide recognition.

Forester Alex Sherman told 22News: “So this year we are increasing our production. Have around 1,500 seeds sprouting now. We have a total capacity of 4,000 people in this facility.

The association plans to hold a memorial tree planting in the town of Springfield in honor of Mr. Sherman’s award. Details will be posted on www.masstreewardens.org.
