FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The deputy chief of the Allen County District Attorney’s office has filed for the position of county attorney.

Michael McAlexander, who has long been the right hand of prosecutor Karen Richards, filed his candidacy on Wednesday. He will run as a Republican.

No Democrats have filed for the position. Friday was the deadline for filing.

Richards has served five terms as an Allen County prosecutor since 2003. This will be his last.

She said at a press conference to announce McAlexander’s campaign that “it’s time” to see what his next chapter in life is outside of the DA’s office.

Allen County Republican Party Chairman Steve Shine released this statement:

Karen has been an exceptional administrator of the office, as well as the very focused lead counsel. The community has been well served by his tenure. As the county’s first female prosecutor, she raised the bar for everything to come. Karen has been an exceptional administrator of the office, as well as the very focused lead counsel. Mike McAlexander will be able to go from chief assistant prosecutor to prosecutor with a zero learning curve. He has served admirably as Chief Deputy throughout Karen’s tenure and knows all aspects of the office. He will be fair, focused and tough on crime.
